In this piece, I express my cultural cosmology by using Native American traditional beading techniques. I use Native American traditional beading technique, with seed-beads and antique Japanese silk textiles. I use a Japanese traditional design of Mizuhiki. Mizuhiki is very important in Japanese culture and in the daily lives of Japanese people. Mizuhiki's importance in Japanese society can be traced back to the eighth century. Mizuhiki adds a special meaning to the Japanese word Musubu. Musubu means 'connection' or 'tying'. Japanese people use Mizuhiki to convey warmth, affection and togetherness. Mizuhiki art is often seen at wedding ceremony. At the center of the piece, I put a Kanji character, meaning blessing and happiness, which is also traditionally used in wedding occasion. All elements of this piece, the design, the character, and the red and white colors convey much blessing and happiness to the bride and groom. |
